Used Toyota Corolla Export Age Limits by Country: Nigeria, Kenya & More

Many importers compare a used Corolla against a new one. Before you do, check the age cap and steering rules in your country. Some markets close the door on older cars entirely.

Car transporters lined up at an export yard before port delivery

The Corolla is one of the most traded used cars in the world, so many buyers start by pricing an older unit. The catch is that more countries now cap vehicle age at import, add heavy levies on older cars, or restrict the steering side. This guide summarises the rules as we understand them in 2026. Rules change often, so treat every figure here as a starting point and confirm it with your clearing agent.

Age and steering rules in key markets

Summary only. Rules change; check the current regulation with your clearing agent or customs authority.
CountrySteering sideAge rule for imported cars (as of 2026, verify)
NigeriaLHDAge cap commonly cited at around 12–15 years from year of manufacture; the threshold has moved over time. Confirm with Nigeria Customs Service.
GhanaLHD only (RHD banned)Cars over 10 years old face a ban or heavy penalties under the 2020 customs amendment, with limited exemptions.
KenyaRHD8 years from year of first registration. China LHD cars are generally not registrable.
UgandaRHDRising environmental levies on older cars and a cap on very old imports. LHD not generally registrable.
TanzaniaRHDNo hard cap, but extra duty on older cars. LHD not generally registrable.
RwandaLHD (new RHD imports banned)Age-based taxes favour newer cars. Check current limits with the Rwanda Revenue Authority.
EthiopiaLHDDuty rises with age, and imports of fuel-only private cars have been restricted since 2024. Check hybrid eligibility before ordering.

A new 0 km 2026 Corolla is the youngest car you can import. It clears any age cap in force today and stays clear of tighter caps for years.

Nigeria: the age cap is only part of the cost

Nigeria accepts left-hand-drive cars, and Corollas are a staple of its market. The import age cap has been set and revised several times, so do not rely on old forum posts. Duty is assessed on customs value, which for used cars is based on a valuation, not your invoice. See our breakdown of Corolla import duty and landed cost in Nigeria.

Kenya and East Africa: steering side decides first

Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia drive on the left and register right-hand-drive cars. The 8-year rule in Kenya is well known, but for a China-market Corolla the steering side is the bigger barrier: LHD cars are generally not accepted for private registration. If you sell into East Africa, a China LHD Corolla is not the right product unless your buyer has a specific exemption, for example a diplomatic, NGO or transit arrangement.

Ghana and Rwanda: strict on RHD, strict on age

Ghana has banned right-hand-drive vehicles for decades and tightened age rules in 2020. Rwanda stopped new RHD imports and uses taxes to steer buyers toward newer cars. Both suit new LHD sedans well. Market notes are on the Ghana and Rwanda pages.

Used vs new: what actually changes for an importer

  • Clearance risk. A used car near the cap can be refused if shipping runs late. A new car has no such risk.
  • Valuation. Used cars are often valued by customs tables, which may not match your purchase price. New cars carry a clear invoice.
  • Condition. Used units need inspection and often parts on arrival. New cars arrive with factory components.
  • Resale. Fleet and finance buyers increasingly ask for new or near-new cars.

Our new 2026 cars are listed on the 2026 Corolla page. The entry trims, such as the 1.2T Petrol Pioneer and 1.8L Hybrid Pioneer, are the usual starting point for price-sensitive markets.
