Toyota Corolla Export to Africa: Which Countries Actually Accept China LHD?
Africa is split by steering side. West, Central and North Africa mostly drive LHD; East and Southern Africa mostly RHD. That single fact decides where a China Corolla can go.

The 2026 China-market Corolla is built left-hand drive only. Before you think about trims, freight or duty, you need to know whether your country will register it. In Africa that question has a clear geographic answer, with a few exceptions worth knowing.
The split: LHD markets vs RHD markets
Countries that drive on the right use LHD cars. Countries that drive on the left, mostly former British territories in East and Southern Africa, use RHD and generally refuse LHD cars for private registration.
| Accepts LHD (drives on the right) | RHD markets (LHD generally not registrable) |
|---|---|
| Nigeria | Kenya |
| Ghana (bans RHD) | Uganda |
| Ethiopia | Tanzania |
| Rwanda (bans new RHD imports) | Zambia |
| DR Congo | Malawi |
| Cameroon | Mozambique |
| Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal, Benin, Togo | Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia |
| Egypt, Morocco, Algeria | South Africa |
Shipping an LHD Corolla to an RHD country in the hope of clearing it later is the most expensive mistake we see. Confirm registration first, in writing.
West Africa: the core LHD opportunity
Nigeria and Ghana are the two largest LHD Corolla markets in the region. Ghana goes further and bans RHD vehicles outright, which removes the cheap RHD used supply from Japan and favours LHD stock. Nigeria accepts LHD and has a large Toyota parts and workshop network. Francophone markets such as Côte d'Ivoire and Senegal also drive LHD but have their own age caps on used imports, which again favour new cars. See Ghana shipping notes and our Nigeria duty guide.
East Africa: Ethiopia and Rwanda are the LHD exceptions
Most of East Africa is RHD, but two countries are not. Ethiopia drives LHD. It has restricted imports of fuel-only private cars since 2024 to push electric vehicles, so check whether a hybrid or petrol Corolla qualifies for your import category before ordering. Rwanda drives LHD and banned new imports of RHD vehicles, which makes it one of the cleaner East African markets for a China sedan. Details are on the Ethiopia and Rwanda pages.
Central and North Africa
DR Congo is officially LHD, although many RHD cars circulate there. Cameroon is LHD. Egypt, Morocco and Algeria are LHD but run strict import regimes, including limits on used cars and, in some cases, licensing quotas for importers. A new car with full factory documents is usually the easiest route, but check the current rules for your importer category.
Which trims fit African LHD markets
Buyers in price-sensitive retail markets usually start with the 1.2T petrol, which uses a conventional layout any workshop can service and has a 50 L tank. Fleet and ride-hail buyers in larger cities lean toward the 1.8L hybrid for its 4.13–4.45 L/100 km WLTC rating. The 2.0L petrol, with 126 kW, suits management cars and buyers who want more performance. Our 1.2T vs 1.8L hybrid comparison covers the trade-offs in detail.
What to check before shipping to any LHD market
- Registration of China-market cars: some authorities ask for a certificate of conformity.
- Fuel quality: all trims run on 92 RON petrol.
- Port and inland route: landlocked buyers such as Rwanda and Ethiopia usually clear through a neighbouring port.
- Pre-shipment inspection or tracking-note rules, which some West African countries apply.
- Duty and VAT for your engine size; check the current tariff with your clearing agent.
Our export process page shows how we prepare documents, and the 2026 Corolla line-up lists all six trims. Send your destination through get a quote and we will confirm the route.
